The Breakthrough Fund for Basic Research
Your contribution to the Breakthrough Fund will provide seed money to be strategically invested in promising research at its earliest stages—innovative projects that lead to the kinds of breakthroughs that make a tremendous difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It funds cutting-edge research that will eventually stop AIDS. Researchers cannot compete for government grants without preliminary data. New ideas are often discounted without those preliminary studies that point to the importance and feasibility of new approaches. Funding a project can take up to two years, and it may take several more years to complete and publish findings. The Breakthrough Fund helps close that gap. Important projects, like the AIDS Biology Program in the Division of Experimental Medicine at UCSF and basic research at the Gladstone Institute for Virology and Immunology, rely on this fund to provide discretionary dollars to invest in promising ideas.
